Geocacher On Fire

Feedback..

From Dave DeBaeremaeker

Hey folks

So I have an idea which may be fun (tho it may also be horrible and
terrible in many unspeakable ways).  Have you heard of travel bug
wormhole caches?  If you haven't, they are basically caches where
folks can drop off TBs, and the CO mails them to another CO, who
releases them into caches nearby.  Example is this cache in NC where
the TBs get sent to New York: GC3PGFC

What do you gents think about us placing a pair of wormhole caches -
one somewhere in the UK (close to either Mark or Colin, (depending on
which one of you wants to participate), and I can place one here in
North Carolina.  Any TBs placed into those caches would get mailed to
the CO of the other endpoint, and released into the wild.

The one downside is that international postage isn't super cheap, but
the upside is that it could be a lot of fun.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers

From Yorkshire Yellow

Dr D,

As far as I understand it, the term 'soccer' was in fact originally an English one and comes from the letters 'SOC' in word Association in the term 'Association Football'.

I have had added two more caches to my NEMISIS CACHE list. Both are in Newton, KS, USA. GC469JG bike path bridge and *******. Both are just plain evil. I posted a DNF on one and a cacher who has found it took pity on me and gave me a very helpful clue. So hopefully next chance I get to try for them again I will succeed! Cache on!

G'day Guys,
Just finished listening to the latest show "Dude, where's my car?" and had a good laugh as usual.
I hope for Sam's sake that the OhBeep travel bug beats mine, because payback will be heading his way if mine wins - the amount of times he keeps saying your TB has won and celebrating before either of us has one will make karma fun.
Yes, my travel bug has changed hands, as I think the previous cacher to have SouthernS@m thought it was for them to keep, especially when I read the log made by Talitakumi: "My first Trackables und than so a nice, beautiful, intelligent, fascinating, enchanting young man :-))) Harry Potter!!!!"
As Talitakumi has only found 8 caches, this made my alarm bells go off, so I found the FAQ on Travel bugs on the geocaching.com web site, changed the language to German and sent that person a link. This prompted a quick change of hands, but still no closer to the UK.  But at least it is still moving.
I don't think I made  any goals for 2014 to review, but I am hoping to make something really interesting in the way of a hide and try to find a cache in another State of Australia for my 2015 goals.
cheers,
The Monkey King
ps - I wonder if the GCDoc was confusing parts of Australia with the UK, as we say "Bob's your uncle" a lot here, whereas I can't recall ever hearing s Pom say it. Please correct me if I am wrong on that.

Sweet, kind, loving, family based show of wonderfulness (And Geocaching)

BananaSource also had a terrible dream.  He was out caching with Moan-A-Lot, mopping up a series he'd already started and helping Moan-A-Lot find the ones he still needed to finish the series.  Suddenly, BananaSource was driving through a corn field with Miss Watto navigating.  Eventually, they stopped and started looking for a cache.  Joined by Geocachers with names such as Dead Or Alive (a big friendly giant of a man).  WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

DUMB STUFF GEOCACHERS DO (Wally sing, their song blows)

Hey Oh Beep!

Well this could go down as either of 'Dumb stuff Geocachers do' or 'Nemesis Cache' but since you said you were out of both I thought I'd share our story.

My other half TT and I were on our way back from a weekend in Norfolk and saw a nice little set in Marham, not far from the RAF base.  A nice little series of eight with a bonus on a great November day - lovely!

We parked up and we were soon at the site of the first cache, we searched for about fifteen minutes and found a clip the right size for a 35mm container but even another ten minutes and we found nothing.  Oh well, maybe bad luck so off we went to the second.

Got there and spent another thirty minutes plodding around the wood looking all over but not a sign.  Blimey not a good start!

On to the third and another twenty minutes, nothing, fourth, same again, blimey are we losing the plot we thought!  4600 finds and we can't find any of these.

By the time we got to seven we were beginning to think there may be something else going on here - especially as there was only really one place this one could be and eight confirmed it - found the screw and glue on the underside of the fence post top, but no cache.

No data signal at site so had to wait a while.  As we were in deepest Norfolk we'd downloaded all the caches Friday, today was Sunday

- series archived Saturday - GRRR!!!

Oh well at least the series owner had cleaned up properly and it was an enjoyable walk!

Knew that would amuse you.

All the best and keep up the great podcast!

Favourite Geocaches - OBGCP49

Doctor D & Bananasource discuss their favourite Geocaches, GPS art and a new film about Geocaching.

Last Week..

Inspired by a post on the Peterborough Geocachers UK Facebook page.  They were asking people to list their favourite caches in that area.  Later in the week, we received a message from a listener who is visiting Nottingham asking a similar question about Nottingham.  Here are some of the caches we like and WHY we like them so much.

Crazy Golf Series by Spire67. A series of 20 caches - starting at Crazy Golf Hole 1 - Balls GC392Z4

The Crazy Golf Series of caches are located in Wollaton Park and Nottingham University Campus. I estimate that the Crazy Golf Series of caches will take about 5 hrs to complete

Nottingham Central Library by Jacaru GC3BRKM. This list wouldn't be complete without a Jacaru cache. We've talked at length about The Cold War Bunker.  BUT...the library cache is probably the only multi you will ever see us recommend - one of the few multis we actually enjoyed doing.

Notts LibraryMarch March marsh march by Huga GCE5B6.  An ammo can, hidden by the River Nene near March.  BananaSource did this cache with Miss Watto

The cache description says the following:

Bray Head, County Wicklow, Ireland.

The first geocache in Europe, placed on 3rd June 2000 - just one month after the demise of selective availability.

On Facebook from Marcus Maximi

Just listened to latest Oh beep and you discussed logging your own earthcache - I looked into this a few weeks ago in my blog post meanderingwithmarcus.blogspot.co.uk

So by visiting the site and composing the earthcache page you have accomplished those goals. So I would argue that you should be able to log your own earthcache.
However, the general consensus on the Geocaching UK Facebook group is that you shouldn't.

Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do..

GeoPaul and BananaSource were having a conversation on Facebook about attending the Halloween Hides & Creepy Caches mega.  Whilst at the mega GeoPaul neglected to eat and drink.  Its essential, when out caching, to make sure you look after yourself - especially if its a long day.

GPS Poppy
GPS Poppy in London Honors Soldiers (from gpstracklog.com)

This year, 27-year-old British war veteran Ben McBean ran a total of 31 miles to draw the outline of a remembrance poppy on the streets of London. Then McBean, who was grievously injured in Afghanistan in 2008 and has a prosthetic leg, called to the public to run around the city and color in the flower. The public took up the call and ran more than 7,500 miles, coloring in the poppy almost completely as of yesterday and raising more than $23,000 (£ 15,000).

Looks like there is another Geocaching film in the works, this time from the UK and with an established actor at the helm, DOUGIE Sannachan.  Gregory's Girl star goes treasure hunting (From www.eveningtimes.co.uk).

His first feature, Star Cash, is the tale of the world wide phenomenon of hi-tech treasure hunts, found via iPhones.

"There are five and half million people in the world who download the geocaching app and go looking for treasure in the likes of Mugdock Park.

"There are that many people who could be interested in watching this movie. There is a massive market and I want to get a deal to release the film."

He adds; "Bill Forsyth inspired me, and it's a zero budget film, using professional pals and helpers. It's taken me a year until now.
