From Shortyknits...

Hey Team D!

The only reason I look forward to Mondays is that there's usually a new Oh Beep to listen to on my commute to work. When I heard this week's introduction, I literally said out loud, "What the hell was that?!?" and played it back a couple times, laughing, before I got to Mark explaining that it was Sam's attempt at an American accent. Sam, is that really what you think we sound like?? Then hearing your attempts at Canadian and Australian accents made me laugh even more. There's something else you have in common with Scott Berks - all of your accents sound exactly the same. Every accent he attempts ends up sounding Indian. Yours ... well I'm not quite sure what yours are. Thanks for trying for me anyway.

I love the show. Keep on doing what you're doing, even if you are offensiving people. Or entire countries.

shortyknits

PS - Huge congratulations on your 500th find!!!

From Dave Self..

Haskell Free Library and Opera House straddles the US/Canada border in Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec. http://haskellopera.com/history/

"...though your visit will be casually monitored by both U.S. and Canadian authorities who keep count so that the people going in from one country exit to the country from which they entered (and who have caught not a few number of people who try to use the Haskell for nefarious schemes of illegal alien passage or illegal arms smuggling), no passport is required..."

From http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g1989246-d4555225-r170786717-Haskell_Free_Library_Opera_House-Stanstead_Quebec.html

So, seems you can't travel from one country to the other via the "house".  Even if someone lived there, they'd need to have a passport.  Within the building, you can, technically cross the border back and forth.

From nationaltrail.co.uk

Hi Mark

Thanks for getting in touch, and for mentioning our geocaching weekend which is the start of 10 weeks of coin releases.

We’re very keen to encourage people to discover the National Trails, and geocaching is a perfect way to get new people on to them. Some of the 15 Trails already have geocache trails, some put in place by the trail teams, others by the public. In time we’d like to have trails on all of the National Trails, the ones without them at the moment are :

Cleveland Way http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/cleveland-way/geocaching

Glyndwr’s Way http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/glyndwrs-way/geocaching

North Downs Way http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/north-downs-way/geocaching

Pennine Bridleway http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/pennine-bridleway/geocaching

South Downs Way http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/south-downs-way/geocaching

South West Coast Path, although as its 630 miles long I suspect there may be some we don’t know about ! http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/south-west-coast-path/geocaching

Pembrokeshire Coast Path - don’t have any geocaching trails. The trail has dangerous parts but the Trail Officer is happy to advice anyone thinking of setting a trail as to places that are suitable - Davemac@pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk

Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path are planning a geocaching trail and are looking for geocaching volunteers to help them - any one interested can contact them directly at nationaltrail@norfolk.gov.uk

If anyone is interested in setting a trail they can either get in touch with the trail manager directly via the contact details on the website, or with me and I’ll pass them on.

If anyone knows of geocaching trails on the National Trails listed above that I haven’t found if they send me a link I’ll add them to the website. Every trail has its own geocaching page, we’re happy to promote any relevant info on that page and through our social media.

Cheers

Anne

Collin French

The more I think about this, the longer the answers get: 1.#Geocaching is exploration, finding new places, finding OLD places. Geocaching is community, like-minded (weird) friends. Geocaching is the thrill of knowing something that others don't (there's a cache there!). Geocaching is a great escape from the pressure and rigours of daily life. 2. Geocaching is not a sport. It is not (to me) a commercial enterprise. Others will disagree with that, especially where Groundspeak is concerned. It is not worth risking mental or physical health over.

Discussion..

A lot of learning can be gained from just being out and about. Feedback from Yorkshire Yellow on this:

For me, and bearing in mind the age of my older geokid (she's 7 on Sunday), the education aspect of our geocaching is either specific to a location where we might be doing our caching (eg a National Trust house, a WW2 site of some sort, or the old canals in this area), or general knowledge, such as bird, plant and tree types, introducing OS map reading to her (what some of the symbols mean), and other such flora, fauna and the natural environment.

I used to be a Scout leader in the various sections and could see caching and GPS skills being a good learning exercise for them, particularly the older sections.  In fact, the Scout have caching/GPS as an option under their 'Navigator' badge.

You may also find this link useful when preparing your show - www.geocachingscouts.org.uk

Placing a cache and writing the cache description can be very educational.  This may require learning the history of an area, then writing about it in the cache description - picking the relevant parts to the cache hide.

Creative writing skills - writing a great log, keeping a Geocaching diary or even a blog.  See above.

Puzzle caches can help in a number of different ways -

  • Good brain exercise and help develop problem solving skills
  • Learning research skills - useful for school assignments

Physical education - climbing a tree, walking.  Healthy body/healthy mind as they say.

Earthcaches are an obvious one to help teach children about an area, geology etc.

The artistic side - Designing geocaoins, TB's etc can help teach a number of artistic skills from drawing to composition.

Craft & design skills - Building unique cache containers can involve wood/metal/plastic work, materials selection (what works best and why, or what doesn't work and why).  If you're really inventive you can teach basic electronics.

Tech skills - using the apps, computer software, GPSr

Media skills - vlogging, podcasting, photography

Social skills - events can be a great way to develop social skills.  Events can also be used to hone organisational skills - remember Geo Oly who organised his own event?

Reading - there are several Geocaching related books out there.  You can also find Geocaching related stories at sites like geocachebooks.com

Dumb things Geocachers do..

BananaSources brush with the seedy use of Forbes Hole Nature Reserve whilst out searching for Whomping Willow (GC3C8ZN)

Couldn't resist including this one from DarrylW4, as he rightfully pokes fun at a BananaSource spelling mistake:

I suspect that the Geocaches do all sorts of dumb things since they don't have brains. How about not running to higher ground as the flood water approach? That's pretty dumb. They've ended up miles downstream. ;-)

As for the Geocachers, I'd say underestimating the difficulty, or overestimating their skills. I once went down to retrieve a cache thinking it would be easier than it was to climb back up. It turns out there was a rope in another cache just for us to use to climb back out, but I did it just slipping a little and grabbing the hands from a couple friends up top.

Hey Mark!

I was just catching up on your recent podcast episode 30 after getting back from GeoWoodstock XII.

I just wanted to say that I really appreciated your story about how Geocaching positively impacted your life. It was great to hear your personal story, and I'm sure there are tons of people out there that have similar experiences while geocaching.

I know for me personally, geocaching has been a great morale booster when I'm stuck in the struggles and stress of daily life. No matter how down I feel, going geocaching, watching geocaching videos and listening to podcasts like yours always puts a smile on my face!

A big thanks to what you guys do, and keep it up

From Yorkshire Yellow

Just to say I enjoyed this segment in your last podcast.

The honesty with which you spoke was touching, and I found myself with a tear in my eye at one or two points.

Although I don't suffer from depression, I do think I get a little 'down' sometimes myself, particularity in the grey winter months.  Also, most of my role at work is in essentially what is a sales environment (letting and sale of commercial property), which, if it's not going well, gets me down.

I've found that quick lunchtime cache, in the green areas in the town where I work, or, If I can manage it, on the edges of the Cotswold Hills, lifts my mood/spirits no end.

I also totally agreed/empathised with you on the 'simple pleasures' side of what you were saying - children splashing in puddles, seeing nature, etc.

I've been on an enforced 4 day working week since the start of the recession, so have been lucky enough to have one weekday a week to spend with my nearly 7yo geokid and now her nearly 3yo sister.

The times we spend together on these days, often on a short caching circuit (on which she invariably ends up riding most of it on my shoulders!) are incredibly enjoyable, and I've some precious memories from these times.

Keep up the good work on the podcast.  I'm enjoying them!

John

(Yorkshire Yellow)

Ask Doctor D...

From Yorkshire Yellow

Dear Dr Duck,

When me or the geokids swap swag in caches, we also replace what we take with something we think is of equivalent or greater value.

However, so often we see caches with, to be honest, are a load of crap in them - broken old fast food toys, soggy paper items, things which have got wet and gone rusty - you probably know what I'm talking about.

My question for you - has the concept of swag in caches had its day?

Thanks Dr Duck!

Yorkshire Yellow

PS - My thoughts on this: We will always tidy up a cache, so that the the 'finding experience' is a better one for the next cacher.  We will will often add more swag than we swap out.  If my (young) geokids are coming caching with me, then I will often try to pick a newer series of caches, where the swag is still there and hasn't had time to 'degrade', which unfortunately seems to be the way of things nowadays.

Hardest Geocache Ever? by twish1999

http://youtu.be/5rieyONff5c

Discussion...

Are paper log sheets still necessary?

Why they aren't necessary:

Technology has moved on, we can now log at GZ online or take a photo as proof and post that to the cache page

A lot of the time logs are turned to mush, so signing is a little pointless/impossible

Cache maintenance would be made much simpler without logs

Most of the appeal of Geocaching is the find, signing the log is secondary

As a cache owner I'm more interested in the online logs and photos.

How many cache owners actually cross check the paper log with the online log to make sure those who claim to have found the cache actually did?

An alternative method can be used to prove you found the cache - such as a code in the container, as seen in the LAB caches at the 2014 Kent Mega

Why they are necessary:

Signing the log is in the rules!

On the bigger caches and special locations its nice to see what people have to say in the log book

There is something a little exciting about seeing a familiar name on a log book, or even seeing that someone is out there caching the same time you are

They're essential for some Geocache types; for example Letterbox Hybrids
