Two more episodes of Chasing Smilies are ready for release, in fact episode 3 is out.  We went live for the first time and it was chaos - fun, but chaos.  We discuss Open Caching, the ideal cache container, GeoCarping and a few other things.

Feedback..

From Heather Cache On Wheels..

Hi there Podcasters Could you join together with me in wishing Chris Dale one of our uk reviewers a speedy recovery please? He has been in hospital for about 2 weeks now and taken to making friends with a Gull and taking selfies with it

Chris set up and does the Follow the Arrow site with a wealth of resources. He does so much for Geocaching, giving of his time freely, just as all our reviewers do.

It's not about what he does in that way, but he is so kind and supportive and I thought it would be great to show our support for him, by thanking him for all he does for others. Now it is time to show we are here for him

I thought a message from you all would be a kind gesture to him. And show our support for his wife Lucilla and his family too.

Seems BananaSource is picking up a new name every week - this week HHH came up with Binary Source.

Nemesis Cache..

We found it.  GC58E0H Smell the Juice by stuarthowe11.  Can it be classed as a nemesis cache if it had gone missing?

Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do..

There are plenty of examples in our 'come caching with us' audio. But one thing that stands out is that we swapped devices during the day and lost track of the caches we went for.  Luckily we had the audio, but we should have kept better track of our finds/DNF's.

Available for pre-order Death Row by Russell Atkinson (the latest instalment in the Cliff Knowles mysteries.

When a court ruling once again halts the carrying out of the death sentences of hundreds of condemned murderers, a frustrated vigilante organization decides to take matters into its own hands. In a mysterious and grisly act of horror, San Quentin's entire population of condemned prisoners is executed in the dark of night. But how? And who are these vigilantes? Answering those questions falls to retired FBI agent Cliff Knowles, now a successful lawyer. His lover, Special Agent Ellen Kennedy, is intent on completing a geocaching challenge known as the Fizzy Challenge, but inadvertently turns Cliff into suspect number one by going for one cache too many. She has no doubt Cliff is innocent, but he's kept a secret from her. He's kept a secret from everyone – and he knows that her faith in him is misplaced. His only chance of keeping Ellen in his life, perhaps even of staying off death row himself, is to get to the critical evidence before the FBI does.

“I was distracted, so I kept driving,” Moreau told Spanish newspaper El Mundo “I saw all kinds of traffic signs, first in French, then German and finally in Croatian, but I kept driving because I was distracted. Suddenly I appeared in Zagreb and I realized I wasn’t in Belgium anymore.” According to that article she not only refueled twice during the trip, but got in a minor accident and stopped to sleep in her vehicle.

From Uncle Bob..

Comment: I didn't know that Dr D was married, does he like the older woman?

There is a lady on GC.com called Dr D's Mrs.

From Mark Pickard..

Dr D said river is the longest word with out vowels :-s errrrrrrrrr I and E

What is the Longest Word with no Vowels?

just tell him there are four six-letter words with no vowel except 'y': rhythm, spryly, sylphy (of or like a slender graceful girl or young woman) and syzygy (a technical term used in astronomy). Rhythm can have an 's' added in the plural to make a seven-letter word without a vowel.
The longest words that contain no vowel including 'y' are crwth (a Celtic stringed instrument) and cwtch (a shed, cuddle, or hiding place). Both of these words are Welsh and treat the letter 'w' as a vowel.

I put this cache out way back in 2011.

Nemesis Geocache & Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do..

Not being vigilant when carrying out cache maintenance.  Doctor D has caused some confusion.  Here is moan-a-lot's log after his experience with The Man In White (GC5191B)

Ahhhhhhh my new nemesis cache for the day! Looked early on for what seemed like a age with no luck at all, I must admit to cheating and contacting the Co for a additional hint, which came eventually (how dare ppl work normal hours!) But as I was picking up a few more of the local hides it wasn't a problem popping back.

Spent a while searching for the hint item haha found it i thought! But if this was the "item" then the vial and log were missing :-( so 1 swift repair job later a photo was dispatched to the Co who duly replied with "looks like the old 1" cheers for all the work moan-a-lot! :-p

Any way thr search continued in earnest, eventually I found the pesky cache, and then another 1 next to it mmmmmmmmmmm now what??? Contacted the delightful co again, who blamed some 1 else who shall remain nameless, fancy passing the buck like that!

Returned to the scene of the crime, and just as i was about to remove the offending item I was approached by a rather heavily tattooed gentleman from the other side of the gate, asking if everything was ok, so had to explain the finer art of geocaching to him (far to many muggles in Castle Donnington and the surrounding areas that was the 2nd time today) still not sure if he knew what the hell I was talking about, but any way the log was duly signed ml with a blunt pencil, the masochistic streak in me says this deserves a F point too, thanks for the smiley :-)

£10k investment helps Barnsley businessman bring sports to work (from Bdaily - Business News), the following caught our attention:

Darren wants to steer away from traditional sports such as cricket and football, and is looking at ones that are more likely to interest women too, such as orienteering, rounders, basketball, geocaching and dodgeball.

The Geocachers Guide to the Galaxy (from www.abc.net.au).  The following caught our attention:

My first run-in with a geocacher was when I was delivering a toilet to a toilet collection. On the day of the installation of the toilet, a man appeared on the side of the road.

He was there waiting to put a small cylinder inside the toilet. It was a geocache.

Interview..

Tips:

1.  Don't be everywhere, focus on "where your target market is talking"

2.  Don't rely on social media, social media is not your super hero

3.  Have great customer service

4.  Don't rely on social media - remember social media networks can close down.  Focus on what you control - your website, use social media to drive traffic to it.  Use a newsletter to get your information out to people (Julia offers tips on how to get people on to your e mail list)

5.  Givers gain - give your knowledge freely, it shows you're an expert in your field and helps build confidence in you and your product.

Hi Guys,

Been listening to the latest podcast with @(B.....He he he,  brilliant offenciving ! We loved it :)

My comment that you and Sam Oh - Beep refers to the great podcast you produce,  but we will follow your comments and name one of our planned caches in your honour. Details to follow.

From Earl aka redbeard4570

Thanks for using the cache find info I sent you on your podcast! I'm sending you another that's my favorite FTF. So far! Feel free to use it in any part of your podcast you like.  Here''s the FTF information.

We all have a favorite cache of some kind or another. Here is my favorite FTF. GC4E2FE - Bullet Holes (MAGNUM) by PINGPONGKINGKONG. A 2.5 D and 4.5 T. I found it on 7-23-2013 in Colorado USA. It was placed on 6-10-2013 and as 9-13-2014 has 5 founds and 1 DNF. My FTF log follows.

"Find #18 of my 5 day weekend road warrior, no plans, the next cache is the direction I'm going so no map needed, caching road trip July 2013! Drum roll please! Not only did I get the FTF on this awesome hide, but now, as of posting, I discovered it had the honor of being a milestone also. My 500th find!!!! SWEET!!! COOL!!! AWESOME!!! Knew 500 was close, but was having so much fun on my vacation I wasn't keeping track. What better way for a milestone than an FTF. Add the location and rating and it just doesn't get much better! Was scouting out possible caches while eating breakfast in Salida. I can't explain my surprise, and the shock of those near by, when I discovered a cache that hadn't been FTF yet! No way! It was around 30+ days old. No way! Breakfast was cut short, GPS programmed and the GeoJeep was heading for the cache! Soon as I turned off, another surprise. I had long wanted to explore this turn off and now I was going to get the chance. The area its self is worth visiting even without a cache. WOW! Got parked, started recon on ways up. Took several try, lots of huffing and puffing, photo breaks, "why am I doing this breaks", and then SUCCESS!!! My most challenging FTF so far. Well worth the effort and time. Plan on bringing some caching friends here ASAP! Thanks for bringing me, and future others, to this wonderful location. T4T$ SL :)"

Nemesis Geocache..

BananaSource has a new nemesis, which we'll talk about next week.  But for this week, yes we're liberally "borrowing" from the UK Geocaching Podcast.  Collin has a nemesis. GCA87C Jacob's MOVING Cache #1 by JacobBarlow.  If you've found it, let us know, its always nice to wind Collin up.

Ask Doctor D..

Dave (debaere)

If one is going for a geocache in Sherwood Forest, and one is a geek, one is all but required to dress like Robin Hood.  The question is, which Robin?  Erol Flyn, Cary Elwes, or Kevin Costners version?

Thanks!

Travelbug Race..

Events..

Due to the length of this weeks interview, we won't be covering events.

Heather, Cache on Wheels, had e mailed with an event she's holding this weekend.  We were meant to include it in last weeks show, but obviously we didn't record.  Sorry about that Heather, we hope your event went well and let us know all about it.

Before we get in to the interview.  Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback and content for the show.  We're putting together a show on apps used for Geocaching, we'd love to hear what you use and why - or even what you've tried and no longer use and why.
