Last Week..

We had an afternoon out at Ilam Hall and Park, in the Peak District.  The intent was to have a walk and do some Geocaching.  We did walk and we did Geocache, but we also did a few other things (such as Pooh sticks, make use of a wishing well and visit a tea room). Check out the photos at www.ohbeep.com/ilam.

From Redbeard4570..

Sounds you guys had a grand time on International EarthCache Day 2014. I did! 2 events and an earthcache. All were in Hutchison, KS, USA.

First event was GC5E1G1 a meet and greet and eat. I was following your advise and eating before caching! 30 plus cachers were on hand with several from both Oklahoma and Nebraska. Not bad having cachers from 3 states.

Second event was the official International EarthCache Day event  GC5CQBT.  90% of those at the first event made to this one with a few on hand who were not at the first event. Both events were enjoyed by all.

Last, but not least, was the  EarthCache  GC5CVNN Strataca - Underground Salt Mine. Hutchison Kansas is one of the largest salt producing areas in Kansas. This is an excellent EarthCache and I highly suggest any cacher that happens to be in the area to go for this one. All info and items needed to find and log this excellent EarthCache as "found" are above ground and free of charge. The mine offers tours, however the tour does require a fee.

The 2 events and the EarthCache were all 3 the work of the TheLabGuys. This caching team is fast becoming known for both great events and caches. Hope everyone else had the chance to get out and earn the special EarthCache souvenir!

P.S.- I also had the chance to help coach a new cacher from my home area on EarthCache day at the events and the hide! We also found one of the most creative hides I've ever found! GC5E6EE Air Mail Hotel. If you find yourself in Hutchison Kansas this is a must have find! Cache on!

GC588QR Oh Noe Not Again! by Paperballpark

Oh Noe Not Again indeed, loved this cache! Was such fun to retrieve as the others have said we'd done the close by jaggers clough series and various others on route.

I'd read the description before setting off but forgot my wellies, so in I went with just my walking boots on straddling the sides yes I got wet, and yes I found the cache :-)

Squelched back to the car and started to dry off, boots were emptied socks off and clean ones on, you know the score but just then a muggle rounded the corner as i was perched on my (pink) towel in boxer shorts and t shirt, told the poor bugger not to ask "i won't, but is the quickest way to Edale?" Luckily the others in the car answered while I continued to change! Deffo favourite point awarded thanks for the entertainment :-)

A log in cache GC3EMP8 Angel of Success 1 - The Angel Series by ConnieCache

Hi,

This is the Omaha Bomb Squad! Apparently a muggle has found your cache and called us to report it as a suspicious device. Unfortunately we have to treat all calls like this as real so we rendered the suspicious device safe which is bomb squad lingo for "we blew it up"! Fortunately the log and the angel trinket included in the cache were recovered undamaged. If you want your log and trinket back call the Omaha Police Department on our main number 402-444-5818 and we can arrange for you to get your property back.

Respectfully,
OPD Bomb Squad

Last Week..

One cache find:

GC58E06 - 28 Days Later - Abandoned Road by stuarthowe11

Not a cache to do after dark - I got a real chill from being here placing the cache at 6pm

RubbishGrafiti

We were wanting to do GC27063 CASTLE ROCK EARTHCACHE - NOTTINGHAM by north king, but life got in the way.  But when researching this cache we noticed the following log from moan-a-lot:

They say earth caches are supposed to teach you something, well this 1 certainly taught me never to take the part time caching wife and geo boy in to Nottingham! It cost me a top of the range frying pan, a boys sling shot, a fish tank and a cuddly toy (ok slight exaggeration there it was some posh pumpkin seed snacks)

From Steve...

Hey guys.  My name is Steve Weeks, and a few years back, I released a CD of Geocaching music called ”Found It!” by the Travel Bugs.I just wanted to let you know that I’m about to launch a Kickstarter campaign to see if I can fund another CD of Geocaching music.  The campaign will launch on 10/15/2014 and will last 30 days. Since the campaign duration is so short, the real trick is trying to reach the Geocaching community in time, so I’d greatly appreciate any help getting the word out on 10/15.

Despite the seemingly risqué title, the music, like the last CD, will be family friendly. Thanks a million and happy geocaching!

From Dave/DudleyGrunt...

Mark,

OpenCaching North America's latest blog features an interview with the creators of the new GoCache card game.

Their Kickstarter just launched yesterday and they've already met their initial goal.  Additional backers and money will allow for improved packages for all.  Check it and and watch their promotional video, too.

I hope you'll consider featuring them / the game on the podcast.

Happy Trails!

Nemesis Geocache..

Not a Geocache this week, instead we have a nemesis geocacher.  It seems our very own GeoPaul has become the nemesis of a four year old Geocacher.

Dr Evil Nemesis

Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do..

There is a great blog post on geocaching.com covering 5 Geocaching Etiquette Tips, the one we discuss is:

Leave No Trace – Be kind to the geocaching game board, which happens to be the entire world.

This is also something we touched on in episode 19 (www.ohbeep.com/19 - The Countryside Code).  When Geocachers leave an area in a worse state than how they found it, then it spoils the area and game for everyone.

Ask Doctor D..

From Lucie (on Facebook)...

Helloooo :) Discovered an interesting fact recently that made me think of you - someone at work was asking if dock leaves really do help for nettle stings or if it's a placebo/old wives' tale sort of thing. It made us wonder! I found out the answer but wondered if you knew? Congratulations on reaching 100 likes btw! :)

So has anyone else been wondering what to do with your now redundant tax disc holder ? As I find that Car TB's are so small and not easily spotted I thought that using the tax disc may help people notice them.

In answer to your question, it's not what I wear it's just i posses a strange ability to attract **** ***** you think the logs you read were bad try looking at my log for GC4J85W

GC4J85W - Somercotes Miners Memorial by Alfreton Divers

OMG what a find this turned out to be, has to rank as 1 of my most memorable finds, EVIL EVIL EVIL my 3rd time at looking but I must admit to not logging DNF'S as they've been 5 min looks on the way home from work, but that's just the beginning of the tale!

Arrived at GZ shortly after 6am for another quick search before home, I eventually stumbled across the cache this time with bleary eyes and a sleep deprived brain yay! Got in to it signed the log ML to save space, but then dropped half the bugger on the ground so a new search began for that, but it was a little dark still and clever me remembered I had a torch in the car so off I went to fetch it, I knew this was going to be a hands and knees job! So there I was on all 4s when I heard a voice behind me "every thing ok sir" oops I was bang to rights, yup it was the police, old bill or what ever else you want to call them. So a lengthy explanation was called for, phone app was shown so was the log and half a cache, I got 1 of those funny looks non caches give you and on there merry way they went, by this stage I felt I had to give up my search so on returning home emailed the owners who have since found the missing piece :-) now people say hi vis vests make excellent urban camo, mmmmmmmmmm this time I think it may have given the game away! Thanks for a truly memorable experience and for that reason alone I'm awarding this cache a favourite point.

From DuneBuddy

I think Amy told you to pack a lunch when the Brits invade Texas because you can't buy Marmite there.

So, here's our new tactic. We send in the Marmite first.  It's a divide and conquer strategy.  Once they're so confused by it they are fighting amongst themselves, in we swoop.

Nemesis Geocaches..

From Redbeard4570

My nemesis cache! GC31BMK. Hays, Kansas, USA. Here is my found posting. It says it best. Well, well, well. Was my face red. I've looked for this one a total of 4 times. With a total of 4 extra sets of eyes. Over a years time. So that fact alone is good reason to be red faced. But add in the fact that I have a hide using the SAME CONTAINER, well, that's red face X4!!! LOL!!! Finally, success and another number in my found list! T4T$ SL :)

I'm sure every cacher has a nemesis cache. Just getting them to admit it is the trick!

We discover a tool that may help you with DNF's.  We all know that DNF's are caused by someone blocking your GPSr device.  What we all need is a GPS Jamming Detector (from gpstracklog.com)

The creation and development of the Signal Sentry 1000 was prompted by the prevalence and accessibility of GPS spoofing devices via the internet and other sources. Such devices can be acquired for relatively low-costs, increasing the risks associated with signal disruption and corruption.

Dumb Things Geocachers Do..

Expect others to go at their pace.  Log slow or fast, why get frustrated by people who don't do it the way you do?

FTF hounds who claim it because there wasn't an online log, or expect others to have logged their find immediately to save them the journey.

Ask Doctor D..

From: The Monkey King

Are cache reviewers always the right people to review caches? Should caches be reviewed?

Travelbug Race..

Our Oh Beep! Where are my other legs? is now in Australia. Tracking History (11414.4mi).  Last known location:
