DUMB STUFF GEOCACHERS DO (Wally sing, their song blows)

Hey Oh Beep!

Well this could go down as either of 'Dumb stuff Geocachers do' or 'Nemesis Cache' but since you said you were out of both I thought I'd share our story.

My other half TT and I were on our way back from a weekend in Norfolk and saw a nice little set in Marham, not far from the RAF base.  A nice little series of eight with a bonus on a great November day - lovely!

We parked up and we were soon at the site of the first cache, we searched for about fifteen minutes and found a clip the right size for a 35mm container but even another ten minutes and we found nothing.  Oh well, maybe bad luck so off we went to the second.

Got there and spent another thirty minutes plodding around the wood looking all over but not a sign.  Blimey not a good start!

On to the third and another twenty minutes, nothing, fourth, same again, blimey are we losing the plot we thought!  4600 finds and we can't find any of these.

By the time we got to seven we were beginning to think there may be something else going on here - especially as there was only really one place this one could be and eight confirmed it - found the screw and glue on the underside of the fence post top, but no cache.

No data signal at site so had to wait a while.  As we were in deepest Norfolk we'd downloaded all the caches Friday, today was Sunday

- series archived Saturday - GRRR!!!

Oh well at least the series owner had cleaned up properly and it was an enjoyable walk!

Knew that would amuse you.

All the best and keep up the great podcast!

Favourite Geocaches - OBGCP49

Doctor D & Bananasource discuss their favourite Geocaches, GPS art and a new film about Geocaching.

Last Week..

Inspired by a post on the Peterborough Geocachers UK Facebook page.  They were asking people to list their favourite caches in that area.  Later in the week, we received a message from a listener who is visiting Nottingham asking a similar question about Nottingham.  Here are some of the caches we like and WHY we like them so much.

Crazy Golf Series by Spire67. A series of 20 caches - starting at Crazy Golf Hole 1 - Balls GC392Z4

The Crazy Golf Series of caches are located in Wollaton Park and Nottingham University Campus. I estimate that the Crazy Golf Series of caches will take about 5 hrs to complete

Nottingham Central Library by Jacaru GC3BRKM. This list wouldn't be complete without a Jacaru cache. We've talked at length about The Cold War Bunker.  BUT...the library cache is probably the only multi you will ever see us recommend - one of the few multis we actually enjoyed doing.

Notts LibraryMarch March marsh march by Huga GCE5B6.  An ammo can, hidden by the River Nene near March.  BananaSource did this cache with Miss Watto

A challenge from Jamie Robinson

I am challenging On the Sauce and Dr D to this one next summer GC43 Europe's FirstA cache by Chris O'Byrne

The cache description says the following:

Bray Head, County Wicklow, Ireland.

The first geocache in Europe, placed on 3rd June 2000 - just one month after the demise of selective availability.

On Facebook from Marcus Maximi

Just listened to latest Oh beep and you discussed logging your own earthcache - I looked into this a few weeks ago in my blog post meanderingwithmarcus.blogspot.co.uk

So by visiting the site and composing the earthcache page you have accomplished those goals. So I would argue that you should be able to log your own earthcache.
However, the general consensus on the Geocaching UK Facebook group is that you shouldn't.

Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do..

GeoPaul and BananaSource were having a conversation on Facebook about attending the Halloween Hides & Creepy Caches mega.  Whilst at the mega GeoPaul neglected to eat and drink.  Its essential, when out caching, to make sure you look after yourself - especially if its a long day.

Nemesis Geocache..

GPS Poppy
GPS Poppy in London Honors Soldiers (from gpstracklog.com)

This year, 27-year-old British war veteran Ben McBean ran a total of 31 miles to draw the outline of a remembrance poppy on the streets of London. Then McBean, who was grievously injured in Afghanistan in 2008 and has a prosthetic leg, called to the public to run around the city and color in the flower. The public took up the call and ran more than 7,500 miles, coloring in the poppy almost completely as of yesterday and raising more than $23,000 (£ 15,000).

Looks like there is another Geocaching film in the works, this time from the UK and with an established actor at the helm, DOUGIE Sannachan.  Gregory's Girl star goes treasure hunting (From www.eveningtimes.co.uk).

His first feature, Star Cash, is the tale of the world wide phenomenon of hi-tech treasure hunts, found via iPhones.

"There are five and half million people in the world who download the geocaching app and go looking for treasure in the likes of Mugdock Park.

"There are that many people who could be interested in watching this movie. There is a massive market and I want to get a deal to release the film."

He adds; "Bill Forsyth inspired me, and it's a zero budget film, using professional pals and helpers. It's taken me a year until now.

Geocaching with Moan-A-Lot & The Silent Child

Last Week..

Out and about with Moan-a-lot and the silent child.   The series we did:

Kia's Ramsdale Roam Series by glamrockangels: Starts with GC4VVQ6, a series of 12 caches (approximately 3 miles walking in total).  BananaSource didn't do too well on the find count - he got one.  The Silent Child grabbed the majority of finds.

However, the following day, BananaSource did redeem himself on the Ingleby series.  A series of 10 caches by meandmycats123, around the village of Ingleby.  Starting with GC5A5QB Barrel o' laughs. Ingleby walk 1.

Things returned to normal a few days later, when Miss Watto and BananaSource went caching in Castleton & Edale.  Of the 18 caches done that weekend, BananaSource grabbed one or two (the memory fades).  For views the best cache of the weekend was ascent of Mam Tor by jammie dodger GC2W9M8).

Mam Tor Photo

In Edale we found 17 caches - beating our previous daily record of 16.  The majority of the caches formed the Booth Loop series, by Paperballpark - 14 caches starting with BL #1: Nagging at the Head of the Trail GC588BN.  There were a lot of stunning views during the series, but the cache of note (for us at least) was BL #10: The Right to Roam GC588M8 - just as we thought we'd cracked the hiders style, this one surprised us.

Redbeard e mail:

Attended two great events on Sunday October 19. Both were held at Coronado Heights park near Lindsborg, Kansas. One was a CITO, GC5CWJP, and the other a meet and greet and eat, GC5CWG8. And I believe you would have approved of all parts of the events, but mostly the eating part. Lots of food prepared by the group of over 30 cachers on hand. No one left hungry.

The building the meet and greet and eat was held in was build in 1936 as part of the WPA. It stands out in Kansas for two reasons. One, it is on top of the tallest hill for some distance. Two, it is a large stone building that looks like a castle!

Now, for you living in England or Europe, a castle may be a common sight. But here in Kansas, it is not! Several caches are also located here.

So all in attendance had a great time. If you find yourself in this area cache, please stop by and enjoy the park and grab some caches!

PS-I typed this slowly in hopes Dr D will not have as much trouble reading it as he has some of my past postings!

Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do..

Poor choice of footwear.  Miss Watto lost her walking boots and suffered from having the wrong footwear. We were doing some walking out in Edale - an area which his hilly and muddy in places.  A pair of trainers weren't cutting it.

In rugged terrain a consideration is something that will support your ankle.  In most other conditions something with a good tread and grip on the sole.  Climate may also play a factor.  In Edale, on that day, something that was reasonably water resistant was ideal.  But in hotter climates, you may want to consider something that lets your foot breath.

Ask Doctor D..

From Dave DeBaeremaeker...

Question for Doctor D.
It is considered bad form to log a find on one of your own caches, because you can't find something you hid.
However you can log an Attended log on events you host, because you attended an event you put on.
The purpose of Earth Caches is to learn about geology.  Since I learned something about the geology when I placed my Earth Cache, can I claim a find on it?
