Discussion about How To Fix Geocaching blog post on www.ohbeep.com - go to www.ohbeep.com/fixgeocaching to read the full post. Main complaints we’ve noticed from Geocachers:

  • Traditionals aren’t what they used to be
  • New geocachers are to blame for the poor quality of caches hidden
  • New cachers don’t know what they’re doing
  • New cachers ask stupid questions
  • Established cachers are cliquey and unwelcoming

Ask Dr D..

From Brilang

Dear Dr. D. Is Wales a separate country from England? Why/why not? Are there border guards & crossings?

From StridentUK

You’re going for a “troll” cache under a footbridge. You touch the container just as you lose your footing and... plop… the cache falls straight in to the fast moving stream and starts bobbing down the river.

What could you do? (What “should” you do?)

From Lucie Meelen

Hello lovely lads. Here is my entry for the Christmas-related Cache Challenge. Someone has to go for the religious side of Christmas, and it might as well be me.

So my two are "Christchurch" (how much more Christmas-related can you get?) and "Father, Son and Holey Post". And just in case you're not at all religious and/or a Life of Brian fan, I realised when doing the screen shot that my next cache could also be construed as Christmas-related! "Brian Revisited".

Thank you and a very happy Christmas to you both and the rest of the family. smile emoticon xxx

On episode 80 (www.ohbeep.com/80) you will have heard us out and about doing a Wherigo (Tempus Fugit), which we didn’t find due to the app crashing.

We checked the previous logs and it seems that we weren’t the only ones who it crashed for. Seems it happened in the same stage for a number of people, using different devices on the hunt.

To Find either 1 cache in another country or 2 caches in 2 counties

Entries from Eric Beal and Lucie Melen

From Eric..

We are entering the eye up me duck challenge this month with two caches in two different county. The first is -GC65JZT- Stockton Springs 8  that is in Waldo County, Maine.

The second is -GC1M8P1- Glover's wig that is in Cumberland County, Maine.

Glover's wig cache was out last cache to get for completing the Fizzy Challenge which I sled down the hill and ripped open my finger nail, while my wife was rapping it up I wish MoanALot was there so I could blame him.

Thanks for a great podcast,

News.. 26:25

Geocaching.com making reviewers reveal themselves? This was discuss on episode 427 of The Geocaching Podcast. Our view:

  • How will this be enforced?
  • Why just new reviewers?
  • Why not give existing reviewers a period of time to decide if they want to carry on under the new rules or step down?
  • Why make them reveal themselves anyway? Seems like trouble waiting to happen.

Police confused by 'concerning' item in 'worrying location' - turns out to be a geocache (From www.falmouthpacket.co.uk).  Oh the shame, its in the UK.

"For geocache enthusiasts out there, please continue to enjoy yourselves but do think about the item your are leaving and make sure it is marked as a geocache, the contents can be seen and be sure it cannot be mistaken for something harmful.

"Finally think about where you are placing it and who might need to know it is there."

Speculation about the "worrying location" included a rabbit hole or a water drainage system, possibly in Penrose woods, while one commenter said the "device" looked like " three tins of beans in some fishnet stockings."

There has been a bit of a bomb scare on one of the GWW Series caches, we did a couple of weeks ago (check www.ohbeep.com/79 to hear our adventures from that series). The cache in question is No Re-Morse GC5VQ7E. Note from the CO:

An update: Notts police have this cache in their possession and will be returning it to us sometime this week, this cache will be moved as it was muggled in it's recent location and reported as a bomb *sigh* please hang in there while we try and rectify this and find a new place to hide it

Tempus Fugit (Wherigo) - OBGCP80

We were going to record a normal episode, but decided to go out and attempt a Whereigo. The Whereigo we attempted Tempus Fugit Created by: RascalGaskells.  This episode is another out and about, travelling through time exploring the history of Leicester.

2:45 Thoughts before going out and attempting the Whereigo..

Trying to use the app to download a Wherigo - won’t allow you to select the pocket pc download.

Logging in to the Whereigo app was hit and miss, eventually allowed me to.

On the website, apparently my UK postcode isn’t valid.

I was able to finally download the Wherigo I wanted.

Getting the cartridge to the phone was easy using Apple air drop - a matter of seconds.

Overall impression - you have to REALLY want to do a Whereigo to put yourself through the frustration that is the app and the website.

Ey Up Me Duck Challenge..

Find 2 caches with halloween / autumn related words in the title

Feedback from Anteus..

Howdy from Texas!

I’ve been listening to the show for at least a few months now after hearing it mentioned a few times on some of the geocaching related podcasts from here in the States. I think this Ey Up Me Duck challenge thing is some sort of contest… shoot, I don’t know, I can only understand Mark most of the time, and not a word of what Doctor D says! ;) So I think I’m submitting my entry for October! Here goes:

I found two caches with ghost in the title and actually placed one with the word ghoul in it! The first cache I found was GC64MRE, “Ghost Stories: Glow In The Dark Under The Tree” and I was actually FTF! It was about 350 feet away from the posted coordinates but the hint got me to where I needed to be. The other cache was GCB5F0, “Ghost Children” which is a virtual at a local haunted location where the ghosts of the children killed in a collision with a train are said to push cars off of the tracks.

I also placed a cache over the weekend… an idea I sort of got from listening to Geosnippits. I 3D printed a zombie hand and had my wife paint it to look all gruesome… I then placed it outside of a cemetery where it looks to be reaching up out of the dirt with a bison tube stuck on one of its fingers. It’s GC6596A, “The Lost Cemetery of Alexander the Ghoul”.

Oh and what the heck does Ey Up Me Duck mean?! Keep up the offensiving! Oh yeah, and I too am a Doctor Who fan… well, a convert of the last year or so. Almost caught up to the 12th doctor.

How long do you spend looking for a Geocache before giving up?

Nemesis Geocache...

From Marcus Maximi..

Everyone has their nemesis cache. I've had a few, but they're usually sorted after a couple or three visits and a couple of hints from previous finders or the CO replacing them but there's one that's been bugging me for several years - Sie Ihren Wagon by Wybo Lakes.

It is situated in the car park of Lidl in St Neots and I have a look for it every time I've been there shopping. That's quite a few times! But never any joy.

Last time I went I saw that all the trees had had a severe hair cut, I had a look around, checked the floor too, but no joy. It must have gone.

Yesterday I went back and everything is still very bare but I went and had a loko anyway. It was dark and rainy by ow and I didn't hold out much hope but I thought I'd have a quick look anyway.
I went back to the place where I always look first and there it was, just sitting there in the open for all to see!!

Unbelievable! This has been more of a nemesis than Oh Beep's airport cache!!!

September

Hi Guys,
Thought I had better get my entry in for Septembers challenge Ey Up Me Duck challenge
Daniel in the Lions Den not only does it have an animal in its name but it is by Lone Wolf plus one, so animal name in the CO's name as well, surely that's worth two entries :) 4 star difficulty but hidden in plain sight made this a quick easy find. Mind you I knew this would be an easy challenge as there is a large series called animal facts hidden all over the place near where we live, so I had plenty to choose from.
Unfortunately even with the bonus time won't be able to get August's challenge done, sadly Uni assignment don't just write themselves, o well only another three weeks to go of the semester, then maybe I might have some more time for caching :)
Keep up the great work guys, look forward to the next show.

from D&V&L

Hello :)

As the last day of September appeared we realised that we hadn't found any animal named caches so a cache hunt was needed on CG.com, the only one un-found by both @(B and I locally was  GC4Q1YC Anti-Tank Bouys (Glynde). So we headed out after dark to find and sign the log, knowing that we would be pushing our luck with this one. Anyway the cache was located and the challenge has either been achieved or we failed..... so we Ask Doctor D Yes or No :)

Looking forward to find out what cunning challenge will be set this month.

Keep up the good work

News..

New geocache launched mapping trail of Cambridge graffiti herons (From cambridge-news.co.uk)

They've proved a big hit since they started popping up across the city, and now fans of Cambridge's graffiti herons can take advantage of GPS technology to help track them down.

The Black Herons of Cambridge is a new geocache with 11 stops, each featuring one of the mysterious artist's creations, which people can use to help visit the artwork across the city.

Suspicious package is a geocache (From lancasteronline.com)

On the heels of the threat, a resident found a suspicious item near the Lampeter-Strasburg campus that police investigated late Sunday. The item was determined to be a geocache, West Lampeter Township police Chief Brian Wiczkowski said Monday.

Geocaching is a treasure hunting game in which players hide items in a container called a geocache and other people try to find the container using GPS devices and coordinates.

Feedback..

From Danno (Team_Pugatch)

Another great show, can't believe how dumb muggles from Winthrop, Massachusetts (1 town north of Boston) are and creating bomb scares.

We moved to Maine a year ago. I actually had Stephen King and Liv Tyler as customers here! Maine is great the hot summer where it's worth having an air conditioner is just 2-3 weeks in August. You can go from the ocean to hiking trails in under half an hour. There's a reason the state motto is The Way Life Should Be!

PS
I loved the Danno song. It's a nickname I got while wrenching in a bicycle shop in my late 20s. I joke around and tell people it's because when I was a kid my mom would always say, "Dan No!" And it kinda stuck...

GGH Tips…

Puzzler26 (a noted hider of clever #geocaches in Metro Detroit) talked in "GGH 171: Puzzler26" about his experience constructing using different material. He began working with wood for its flexibility but has since moved to PVC. He's not done experimenting yet as he's been playing with caches made from composite decking material. It's a continuing process to find what works and what doesn't and he's happy to share his experience. Are you sharing yours? http://cacheamaniacs.com/ggh-171-puzzler26

Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do..

From Ey Up Me Duck

Dumb stuff geocachers do: we have a bike rack which fits on our tow bar and can be lowered down to get in the boot. Ady has a few times lowered this, got stuff out the boot, raised the bike rack and got back in the car ready to drive off before realising boot us still open!!

We also did a wherigo near Bourne which had clues to each stage which you had to decipher in rot 13. Annoyingly it wouldn't let you copy and paste so Ady would read out the code and I'd type them into a decoder. 3 timed during this wherigo he read me the letters to the last hint!! Arg,!

Or do a tree climb at the mega, sped up on ropes but on the descent Ady pressed descender to steady himself - not a good idea as he then sped towards the ground back first! Luckily he was okay although the hearts of those watching weren't.

GGH Tips..

When we spoke with noted Metro Detroit hider Puzzler26 he shared his "close clues" concept. Clues are hidden around some of his geocaches with information to entertain or inform the finders. Check out that interview and get some inspiration for your #geocaching on "GGH 171: Puzzler26."
