Last Week...

We took a week off solving puzzle caches, here is this weeks:

Final Destination, A cache by Kelex GC54F7G

BananaSource had a brain wave.  Roving reports from our younger listeners. Its simple, whist out and about (or when they get home) record some audio of your adventure and send it to feedback@ohbeep.com

On your audio include your geocaching name, some other things you may want to include in your audio:

  • The cache name and GC code
  • What was great about this cache?
  • Did you like the cache?
  • Did something special happen on the way to/from the cache?

If you're shy, no worries.  Just write your adventure down and we can read it out for you - or even get our special robot voice to read it for you.

Dave DeBaeremaeker

Couple points I thought about as I was listening:

I wrote this doc to help out first time Mega event attendees:
http://debaere.blogspot.com/2014/03/mega-events-survival-guide.html which may help some of your listeners with their first Mega.

Secondly you talked about the "bomb" scare at an Ohio rest stop.  Just as an FYI, in the US, most "rest stops" are simply places to pull off the road - they generally don't have petrol stations or restaurants, just a parking lot, some green space to walk the dog or have a picnic lunch, and a restroom.  Occasionally they have an emergency phone, and a coke machine.  Which really makes the idea of someone placing a bomb at a rest area increasingly silly.

The areas you were talking about would be referred to as service stations, or truck stops, which generally have petrol and diesel stations, and one or more restaurants.

I really enjoyed the description of the lab caches.  Sounds like they really stepped up their game from the ones I did last year.  Makes me excited about checking out the lab caches at the Megas I am going to be attending this year.

Anyhoo, good show.  Keep em up!

Ask Doctor D...

Darel Beghtel What apps, programs or websites do listeners use to locate the .1 mi. radii around caches in an area that has a lot of cache hides in it, to be able to locate areas that a cache can still be hidden?

Easiest method:

Use the Seek a Geocache , specifically the "Latitude Longitude Search".  Put your proposed geocache coordinates in the latitude and longitude boxes. This will produce a list of nearby caches with distances from your coordinates,  including the distance to any Premium Member Only geocaches. This allows Basic Members to avoid being too close to those PMO geocaches when placing theirs.

Or

Whilst out on the trail, bring up the official app and do a live search for nearby Geocaches - you probably need to be a premium member to ensure you're getting a list of ALL the caches in an area.

WWFM XI - Dorchester, Dorset, England.  An event cache by Poole_Man. GC54MB0

Its my first event and I am a little excited about the fact that I have found a totally new venue for a WWFM event.

Its at the statue of a Dray horse called Drummer who was the last ever Dray Horse to have worked at the Eldridge Pope Brewery that used to be at the location until it closed in 2002.

The statue is placed at the location of the Dray Yard at which Drummer spent his working life and shows him walking out of the Dray Yard into retirement.

The statue was only put in place in April 2014.

It seems this flash mob can also be part of a fun filled day out.  Dorset County Council are holding a FREE (non geocaching related) Open Air Cinema event.

Showing 'Finding Nemo' at 6pm, then 'Warhorse' at 8pm An event for all the family, preceded by music from local young bands starting at 4pm. DYE also plan to have a bouncy castle, inflatable bungee run and other entertainment. Food and refreshments on offer with Pizza and a bar!

Geocaching Basics: Making a Geocache

The Kent Mega...

Our first mega, some of our thoughts:

Life is full of small coincidences.  We parked up at the mega and getting out the car next to us was GeoPaul.

Geocachers are friendly.  As we were getting our gear together, the couple parked next to us asked if we logged trackables.  Which we do.  They had a couple of great coins to discover.  We had a little chat and then went on our way.

Fish out of water at first

Learned a lot about the timing of such things - the stalls will still be there later in the day, when the crowds die down

Its a very positive atmosphere and people are very happy to talk and share their Geocaching stories

We'd plan ahead better.  We missed the caches published on the day, due to not having connected to the wifi in the hotel and not having a great data signal on our phones.

Its a great opportunity to meet those people you may have spoken to online, but also meet new people.

The LAB Cache experience.

Our photos of the series of caches can be found at www.ohbeep.com/gallery

Frustrating at first.  We relied on just having the web link to the cache page.  Big mistake, as we had very poor data connection.  Had we arrived at the LAB Cache station sooner, they were handing out leaflets with the cache information on.  But we could have also taken photos of the information they had on the desk.

Having finally connected long enough to grab the gpx file of the cache and loaded it in to Geosphere, off we went.  Having no data was a major frustration - having received the link via e mail the day before, we should have planned better (our ignorance was our downfall).

Here's another lesson learnt, at a mega, we didn't need the co-ordinates.  We just needed to follow the crowd and stop where they stopped.

The first location for this particular LAB Cache was Cache of Fame, not indicative of the quality to follow - was that deliberate?

Once we arrived at the wooded area, where the remaining caches were located, we were greeted with a number of high quality cache hides.  It was a little strange being able to see where the next cache was hidden - but even being able to see GZ didn't give away the crafty hides themselves.  At this point there was no need for GPSr or phone - well the phone would come in handy for logging the finds, but that could be done back home.

From memory - maybe not in the order we did them.

Cache Dispenser - a number of film canisters in tubes (made of tree bark). Our task to find the canister with the code. The previous finders did a good job of re-hiding, so it was still a challenge.

The LAB Cache - a mad scientist had set up his lab in the middle of the wood.  I hope GeoPaul filmed this one, I can't remember where on the table the code was hidden?

One Cache Too Many - a cacher had set up camp in the wood and had left the next code hidden in his socks.

Picnic Cache - a nice picnic scene in the woods.  From memory the cache was hidden in the picnic basket.

Treasure Cache - it seems pirates had left their swag, buried in these woods.

Pool Cache - a ball pool in the woods.  Now, this should have been a real challenge, but GeoPaul found the right ball before we'd even started looking.

Crash and Dash - the most impressive of them all.  A plane, crash landed, in the woods.  Its pilot stuck in a nearby tree.  The code we needed printed on his boot sole.

Race for FTF - two high end sports cars, crashed in to a tree.  The code we needed, hidden under the bonnet of one of the cars.

Its in the cache title - again, another that should have been a real stumper (remember we'd not got the clues).  Somehow I managed to pick up the VHS box with the code in it, first time of trying.

Other than the frustration of not being able to get a data connection and partly due to our lack of planning ahead, this was a great series of caches.  Even the number of people looking at the same time didn't spoil the fun - it was a little like waiting your turn at crazy golf.

Feedback...

From Dave DeBaeremaeker

Heya fellas!

So I just listened to the latest episode about travelling with
kids, while biking into work.  Lots of good tips, but I think you
missed some important ones related to travelling with really small
kids. I thought I'd share some lessons learned while travelling on my
own road trips.

For reference I have a 4 year old son named Zeke, and a 2 year old
daughter named Abigail.  I started both on long road trips when they
were 4 weeks old, and at this point both have been on many multi-week,
multi-thousand mile road trips.

So some tips:

1) Add extra time for kid maintenance.  I used to call this Zekey time
in the schedule.  Young kids, especially newborns, require frequent
feeding and diaper change stops.  So I always added in a half hour to
the schedule for every 2 hours planned on the road.

2) Know your kids nap schedules, and plan accordingly.  Young kids
function best when they stick to a schedule.  Both of my kids liked to
nap at around 2PM for a couple hours, so I tried to plan my day so
that we'd do the touristy things like museums, parks, hiking,
geocaching etc. during the morning, and planning on simply driving for
a solid 2-3 hours in the afternoon.  This let the kids burn off energy
and have fun in the mornings, and sleep at normal naptimes in their
carseats.

3) Limit distance.  I try to limit the drive time to 5 hours a day.
As they get older this gets longer, but in general 5 hours allows us
to get some distance in, and still lots of time for doing things along
the way.  We have done 8 hours at a stretch, but those were days where
we knew we'd not be back in the car for a few days.

4) Keep spares handy.  Spare diapers, spare change of clothes, spare
towels for wiping up spills.  Nothing sucks more than having to pull
over on the side of the road to change your 2 year olds cloths because
he had an accident, and having everything buried in the bottom of the
luggage pile in the trunk.  I kept spare towels, diapers, and clothes
in a bag under their seats so I never had to go digging for things.

5) Keep a lot of toys handy.  Between the front seats in our minivan
we kept a box of toys and books - a lot of em  - 10-15 or so.  Young
kids have small attention spans, and they drop things easy, so having
a large supply of things at hand to pass to them keeps kids happier
longer.

6) Same for snacks.  I keep an extra sippy cup and some snacks in the
front of the car that can be passed back at need.  Even a 1 year old
in full tantrum has trouble resisting a cookie.

Cheers

Ask Doctor D...

From DarrylW4 - Should I post a "Needs Archive" log if I can't find a Geocache and I'm sure its not where it should be?

This week saw the launch of a new website www.cachepads.com

Cachepads is a website where you can search an area for places to stay, Geocache friendly places, some owned by other Geocachers, who are offering you the chance to stay with them in their homes, whilst visiting the area.

Each host will offer different facilities, but all will be 'Geocacher friendly' and be able to give you a bed for the night and some local knowledge to enhance your Geocaching experience.

TerraCaching.com announced their new Community page this week, you can find it at community.terracaching.com.  There's a bunch of stuff on there including sections for users to submit ideas, questions and make requests.  There is also a resources page with a lot of information ranging from how to geocache to sneak previews of the new TerraCaching.com site.

Geocaching.com announced the newest cache type this week, on their blog.

A Giga-Event Cache is an event that is attended by 5000+ people. These events are similar to Mega-Events and may include activities, could last several days and are usually held annually. Since Giga-Events are so rare, they attract geocachers from all over the world.

You can find out more about Giga events at the FAQ page set up by geocaching.com.

www.nightlightstories.net have released part 3 of their Geocaching story, featuring Haver Hawkings. Terrapene Ornata Part 3.  It has an ending that will capture the imagination of younger geocachers.

How To Make An Evil Magnetic Log Geocache by TheEvilGeocacher

http://youtu.be/8vyMMpmnepY

Traveling With Children...

Pre-Journey...

  • If you're taking devices; i.e., iPods, tablets, phones, hand held gaming machines, e readers  charge them
  • Clear the car out of anything not needed for the trip. That extra space will make the journey a little more comfortable and you won't have the stress of trying to fit more stuff in.
  • Administer any travel sickness remedies - tablets, bracelets etc.  Also make sure they make it in to the car, in an easy to reach place, with you.
  • Don't ask if anyone needs the toilet before you leave, insist they go to the toilet.
  • Prepare a bag, which will be easily accessible during the journey, that contains the things you will need during the journey. Chargers, drinks, snacks, etc.
  • Think about how you want the kids to be entertained during the journey. Pre-load devices with films, games, books etc.  Plan surprises - keep a couple of things back to surprise the kids with if they're looking bored.
  • Headphones - three films, games, etc playing at the same time can be distracting.  Headphones can be a godsend.
  • Pack wipes, towels, sick bags etc. Just in case.
  • Load some caches along the route in to your GPSr/phone. Try to plan them around when you'd expect to take breaks.
  • Take a couple of outdoor toys; e.g. a football.  If you stop at a service station with a grassed area, the kids can burn off some energy

The Journey...

  • Smallest in the middle.  Two main reasons.  One, so you can see out the rear view mirror.  Two, the smallest tends to swing their legs.  After a few hours of little feet banging the back of your seat you may be a little on edge.
  • Take regular breaks - how often will depend on how far you're travelling.
  • Keep everything you need for the journey close to hand.
  • Make it as comfortable as possible; loose comfy clothing, pillows etc
  • Take a spare set of clothing

Cache On Wheels...

Thanks very much for highlighting handicaching.com and it's benefits in your latest podcast :)
It was great how you demonstrated on the show:

- just how simple the process of rating a cache is

- anyone can rate a cache, it just needs for cache owners to agree to add the HTML code at the bottom of the description on their cache page. Thanks to all those who have :)

- how it gives 'information' which valuable to everyone to make an informed decision. This is important as a everyone's abilities are different and one persons ability can fluctuate and for some, without warning.

An idea - maybe post a link in your podcast page to the forum about handicaching and ask viewers for questions, making sure they are respectful of course and what information would be useful to them as cache owners to about what to put on their cache pages and rating caches?

The gagb forum thread I started is here

On Maker Madness – I'd have liked it to been held in March or November. That's when people seem to be thinking about new hides and would have been more timely.
