Heya BenignSource and Doctor D.

So some feedback from ep 40.  Disclaimer: I have only listened to the first 30 minutes or so during my ride in to work.  I will listen to the rest on the way home, but I wanted to get this feedback out now so I don't forget about it during the day.

First of all, you definitely have to be careful using StreetView for solving puzzles, tho I have used it successfully in the past.  There are several issues, depending on where you are (and I have no idea if any of this applies to the UK):  1)  Some of the address locations are dependent on outside data sources, and are only as good as the data source they came from, and sometimes those sources contain inaccurate data.  Also the GPS can be off by a bit as well (just like you expect at a geocaching GZ, the natural error can be up to 30ft off).  Also, StreetView often blurs house numbers, so it may not be possible to read the numbers anyway.  I am not sure in what countries this happens, but it does happen.  Finally., StreetView will show you the closest image to the GPS coordinates, and they only take photos every so often. On my street it seems to be about every 30ft or so.  So if you add it all up its not inconceivable to be 60ft or so off, and have
the required info for a puzzle be blurred out anyway.

I have successfully used it when it was "read the numbers off a pole on a bridge", or "count the benches outside of a business".  Your mileage may vary, so its likely best to visit the location.

Second, GCDoc was looking for Dr. Who themed caches.  I have one of my own, which I turned into a book library: LIbrary of Gallifrey http://coord.info/GC4PKMW.  It is a field puzzle using two containers. Hanging in a tree is a small TARDIS (12inches high or so, custom made out of wood).  You need to read the cache description to figure out how to open the lock on the TARDIS door.  Once inside you get a key to unlock an ammo can (at the base of the tree).  Inside the ammo can (painted TARDIS blue) are a bunch of books people can trade for, including a lock'n'lock containing the log, and a place to put TBs. Might be an idea for others to copy.  I have pics on my blog: http://debaere.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-library-of-gallifrey.html if anyone wants more details on the container.

Thirdly, unlike you I love a good multi.  However I do prefer it when each stage gives a clear way to double check the coordinates.  Either by giving them to you outright, or providing a verification method, such as a geochecker, or a checksum.  You can also, in some cases, look at the coordinates on a map to sanity check if they make sense. If your coordinates put you somewhere were a geocache obviously can't be, you know you got something wrong and you need to double check your calculations. This has saved me on numerous (tho not all) occasions
when I have made mistakes in my math, or data gathering.

That is it so far.  Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Karl, KAB1972

Hi Guys

Just been enjoying your latest show. It is not an 11 on Sam's shirt, it's a pause ( or "on strike" as Sam calls it)

Looking forward to the next show, happy caching

PS feel free to offence Alex some more for his comments on your lady voice :)

PPS Alex - @(B - has his 11th birthday on Tuesday,  making him the oldest boy in the school when he goes back next week,  chances of him behaving like it may be slim, maybe he needs a reminder :)

He's had his own caching account for a few months and has logged over 50 finds (unlike Dr D) and his all 7 #SofA.

PPPS My thoughts on giving back to caching. .... I've placed a number of caches and planning some with Alex,  you and Sam Oh-Beep.

From The Monkey King

Dear Dr D,
Had I known that my giving you my password to my email account so that you could secretly email another man's girlfriend, I would not have agreed to let you use my account.

When you asked me to use my email account to contact a special friend, I thought it was because it was because you were shy about a crush you had on someone in your own town, and feared rejection.

I was shocked to learn that not only did you use my email to chat to someone in another country, but that she is already going out with someone else!

To make it even worse, you blamed 'banana source' (or was that 'dinosaur'?) for your actions and didn't have the decency to 'man up' and accept responsibility for your own actions.

As such, I have no option but to change my email password and wash my hands of the whole event.

You Sir, are a bounder and a cad! For shame!

regards,
The Monkey King

Discussion..

How much information do you expect to see on a cache page?  What is the minimum you expect to see?

Jeff King - If there's nothing to say about the location then don't bother placing a cache.

Jim Bay - given that most people fail to read the description, it seems the name and co-ords are enough, but I prefer to read everything, as it can make the difference between a 'found it' and a 'DNF'. Thus the minimum for me is as much information the cache owner can give me.

Tony Liddell  - Tbh I rarely read the description, and am especially put off by lots of writing. I appreciate the CO is often hi lightning the relevance of the location, but I must admit to usually only looking at the co ords and hints  feel guily now

Kinda sad that I have to explain to this to you. Turn in your Doctor Who membership cards please.

Dumb Things Geocachers Do..

Greetings from Kansas USA! I listen and greatly enjoy your podcast program. Here is a cache find posting I made for a multicache I found while caching with 2 other cachers. GC58R4X The Necropolis At Mount Allen by ottieolsen is the cache. Feel free to use it on your show if you would like to.

Here it is, Excellent multi! Good fun, good history. And if you aren\'t operating at 100% and don\'t get the decimal point at the right spot you can turn it into a 5 spot multi!!! Oh, did I say 5??? Try 6 if you screw up on the decimal location twice!!! LOL!!! And if you are so multi talented (get the pun???) as I am you can visit 2 locations that neither is correct, yet both are excellent locations for a container!!! (lots more LOL! Either that or cry!) Soooo, after an extra 45 minutes of searching that would have worked for an episode of either CSI or NCIS, we (caching with 2 over cachers) FINALLY got to the correct location for the final!!! Bells rang, horns honked, fans cheered! (In my mind they did anyways! But it may have been from the heat!) We were rewarded with another ottieolsen class, not what we were expecting, cache container! Thanks again for another awesome cache in the Hays area! Cachers are always telling of the wonderful things that they have discovered and learned from Geocaching. I agree! Now I can add double checking info, repeatedly, to that list! Cache on! Podcast on! Redbeard4570

Nemesis Geocache..

D D & B S,

I really enjoy the banter between you two.

As of this month, August, my nemisis cache(s) are Mystery/Puzzle Caches and Multi-Caches. It seems that ever since the 7SofA, I can't find the final or the next stage to get the souvenir. As of this email, I have less than two weeks to get these last two cache types. To top it off, I've found all the Mystery and Multi's in my town and neighboring town, so I have to travel 15-30 miles one way just to fail. I don't know if I'll get all seven souvenirs.

Doctor D,

I wouldn't worry about Scott Berks and a "plane ticket", I've heard that he won't drive into downtown Chicago to go geocaching. So you're probably safe...but then again, you are talking messin' with his girl. :-0

Listening from NW Indiana and loving the show.

Keep up the good work,

What makes geocaching so great and unique, in comparison to other activities?

  • Its a "make your own adventure" activity. You tweak what, when, where, why, who and how to make the game unique.
  • It's a tour guide  Dave DeBaeremaeker "I've learned so much history about my town, and may other towns, that I never would have found without caching."
  • It gives you a reason to explore
  • It can make socialiser out of the most delicate of wallflowers Dave "I am not a social butterfly - just ask my wife about how cranky I get after spending a few hours at most social events.  Make it a social gathering of geocachers, and I am  there all day, and wanting more the next day.  Being amongst ones tribe is a good thing, and among geocachers, I've found my tribe."
  • Cache On Wheels Geocaching "Geocaching can be done by everyone, we can't get them all but there's plenty to choose from. It encourages you to meet knew people, explore our wonderful world, learn historic and geological facts. It encourages us to get out and about giving us a purpose and plan where to go, or be able to do it ad hoc.
Oh and you get pretty pics to out on your profile page."

Nemesis Geocache..

Dave DeBaeremaeker I had a different sort of nemesis cache.

As you know I am Canadian, but live in the US. In Canada. Just a short distance from where our family lives, exists one of the oldest trees in Canada. It is called the Comfort Maple. I didn't know this tree existed until I started geocaching, but ever since I discovered it about 4 years ago, I have wanted to do the geocache at the tree.

We tend to visit family once a year or so (its a 13 hour drive), but every time we go I went to the site of the Comfort Maple, and hunted for the cache. Every time, almost like a conspiracy, the cache has gone missing just before I arrive, and replaced sometime after I'm gone.

Every. Single. Time.

Until this last time, when Lady Luck, The Fates, or just good living, finally cut me a break and I was able to grab the cache there.

After seeing the hide, there is no way I missed it before - it was definitely gone.

I have a blog post about the Comfort Maple here: The Comfort Maple

GAGB EVENT

Greetings Podcasters,

We would be really grateful if you could make space for the following bit of news in the next edition of your podcast.

"The Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) was established in 2003 to provide a national geocaching organisation and serve as a UK and Ireland point of contact for geocachers, landowners, the media and others with an interest in geocaching. We maintain a database containing details of landowner consents and/or restrictions on the placement of caches, in respect of many parts of the UK and Ireland; provide a GAGB members' forum; maintain codes of conduct and geocaching guidance; liaise with landowners as necessary; offer support to geocachers generally and provide a national organisation for enquiries about geocaching from the public, the media and others.

The GAGB also produces a bi-monthly full-colour e-magazine, 'Seeker', containing UK and Ireland caching news, reviews and articles.

Last year we celebrated our 10th birthday by holding CITO events across the UK. We decided to make this an annual event, on the second weekend of September and so across the 13th and 14th of September we are inviting cachers from all across the UK and Ireland to join us in attending, or even hosting an event.

This year we wanted to step away from the typical "picking tin cans out of a layby" CITO and really want to focus on the conservational aspect that often gets overlooked. We have had several events published so far, from the South coast to the North of England and the tasks being performed are really exciting.

In Thirsk, volunteers will be clearing an ancient dyke ready for archaeologists to get in and explore

In Horsham, the team will be assisting with heathland management and birch tree removal

In North Somerset, attendees will be mowing a meadow with scythes, the most eco friendly way to manage the meadow

At Weymouth, folks will be getting involved with a nature reserve and removing invasive species.

And there is lots more to do

We really want to encourage as many cachers as possible to come out and support these events. Of course you may not have an event close to you, so why not host one yourself? You can contact the committee on gagbcommittee@gagb.org.uk and we will be happy to get you started with your CITO event listing.

You can find a bookmark list of all the events published so far at http://bit.ly/GAGBCITO

We look forward to seeing you soon.

How hard can it be to find a cache?  BananaSource two failed attempts to start the 7 Souveniers of August.

The plan was to start with

Traditional: Church Micro 6093 ... Castle Donington - St Edward A cache by GeoSandJLeo GC58DW3

Puzzle: Church Micro 5845...Kegworth A cache by stuarthowe11GC55AQK

DarryW4 mentioned that you get a ranking when finishing the 7 Souvenirs of August - could we aim to be the LAST to finish it?

Why we're archiving a cache that hasn't been out in the wild for more than six months - The Man In White GC5191B.

It seems some take the title literally and think they have to enter private property to grab the cache - because they don't think the co-ords are accurate.  Easily solved with a note in the description, but who reads those?

Its damaged and I can't find the spare parts box (irony alert).

Geocachers should be a temporary thing.  We've highlighted this area to others, lets archive this cache to see what they can do with the location.  Keeps the game fresh.

We all play the game in our own way, hiding caches is not where I get my enjoyment from the game.  There is the argument that as cachers should give back by creating hides.
